What SJTN Delivers Under VIP
What we're approved to provide
SJTN is currently approved by Veterans Affairs Canada to deliver two service families under the Veterans Independence Program. If your case manager has authorized either of these for your file, we can begin care without you paying out of pocket.
01
Personal Care
Hands-on support with daily living — bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, transfers, mobility assistance, and help with eating. Delivered in your home by trained personal support workers, oriented in trauma-informed practice for veterans living with PTSD, OSI, and service-related chronic conditions.
02
Health & Support Services
General in-home support — supervision, medication reminders, light personal assistance, escort to medical appointments, and ongoing health monitoring. Coordinated with your case manager and any clinical team already on your file.
Other VIP-covered benefits — such as housekeeping, grounds maintenance, transportation, and caregiver respite — are delivered through other providers your case manager designates, or paid as annual grants directly to you. We can help you understand how the full program fits together.
Who We Serve
Built for the people who served — and those who served alongside
Home care eligibility under VIP isn't only for the veteran. Your family qualifies too. So do survivors. SJTN delivers personal care and health & support services directly; we also help you understand the rest of the VIP program even when another provider delivers it.
01
Veterans
CAF and RCMP veterans with a VAC-recognized service-related condition. If you've been assessed by VAC, there's a strong chance you qualify for VIP. If you haven't been assessed yet, your service-related conditions may still make you eligible — we'll help you find out.
02
CAF & Veteran Families
Spouses, common-law partners, and primary caregivers may qualify for VIP support — including respite and homemaking benefits delivered through other VAC-designated providers — when caring for a veteran with significant care needs. Active CAF families in Kingston can also access support through KMFRC referrals.
03
Surviving Spouses & Primary Caregivers
If you were the primary caregiver to a veteran who has passed, you may still qualify for ongoing VIP benefits — most commonly housekeeping and grounds maintenance, paid as annual grants. Many surviving spouses are eligible and don't know it. Call us, we'll point you in the right direction.
How We Engage
Two ways forward
Whether you already have a VAC case manager or you're starting from scratch, we meet you where you are.

Getting Started
Four steps. We do most of the work.
Designed for veterans and their families — no portals, no jargon, no waiting on hold.
1
Reach Out
Call us, email us, or fill out the form. Tell us briefly about your situation — current condition, whether you have a VAC case manager, what kind of help you need.
2
We Confirm Coverage
We contact your VAC case manager (or help you start the process if you don't have one). Once VIP authorization is confirmed, we know exactly what's covered.
3
Care Begins
We schedule and assign care workers familiar with veterans' needs. Same care worker continuity wherever possible. Trauma-informed practice throughout.
4
We Handle Billing
Approved claims are submitted to VAC directly under VIP. You receive monthly visit summaries — never a bill. If your needs change, we work with your case manager to adjust authorization.
Who We Work With
Coordinated with the partners who already know your file
Veteran care works best when the people supporting you talk to each other. We do.
Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC)
Veterans Affairs Canada cards accepted under the Veterans Independence Program (VIP). We submit claims to VAC directly and coordinate with case managers on coverage, scope changes, and renewals.
OSI Clinic Kingston
We coordinate with the Operational Stress Injury Clinic for clients managing PTSD, OSI, and service-related mental health concerns.
Kingston Military Family Resource Centre (KMFRC)
We accept referrals from KMFRC and coordinate care for CAF families currently serving as well as transitioning families and veterans.
Canadian Forces & Medavie Blue Cross
We submit claims directly to CAF Blue Cross and Medavie Blue Cross for eligible services.
It depends on what VAC has approved on your file under VIP. The program is needs-based — your VAC case manager determines what's authorized based on your service-related conditions and current care requirements. Once approved, SJTN submits claims to VAC directly. You don't pay out of pocket for approved services. If you don't have a case manager yet, we can help you start the conversation with VAC.
Call us anyway. We'll explain what VIP covers, help you understand if you may qualify, and walk you through how to request a VAC assessment. If you have a service-related condition that affects your daily living, there's a meaningful chance you qualify — many veterans never apply because nobody explained the process. We'll explain it.
You don't have to take our word for it. Call the VAC / Medavie Blue Cross Provider Inquiry Line at 1-888-261-4033 and they can confirm SJTN Care is registered to submit claims under the Veterans Independence Program. We're happy for you to verify before we start — it's the right way to choose a care provider.
Often yes — VIP funds respite hours for the primary caregiver. SJTN doesn't bill respite directly under our current VAC approval, so respite hours are typically arranged through another VAC-designated provider once your case manager authorizes them. We'll flag it during intake so it doesn't get missed, and we coordinate around whatever care is in place.
Possibly yes. Surviving spouses and primary caregivers of veterans may continue to receive certain VIP benefits after the veteran's passing — most commonly housekeeping and grounds maintenance, which VAC pays as annual grants directly to you. Those grants aren't billed through SJTN, but we can help you understand what may apply. Call us and we'll point you in the right direction.
Yes. We submit claims to Canadian Forces Blue Cross and Medavie Blue Cross directly for eligible services. If you have a separate Blue Cross plan alongside VAC, tell us — we'll coordinate across both.
Yes. Our care workers receive orientation in trauma-informed practice specifically for veterans living with PTSD and Operational Stress Injuries. We also coordinate with the OSI Clinic Kingston when clinical care is involved, so your home care and clinical care stay aligned.
Yes. We honour sex-specific preferences for personal care where staffing permits, and most of the time it does. Tell us during intake — many veterans (and especially veteran spouses) have a strong preference and we treat that as essential, not optional.
Yes. Active CAF families in Kingston can access our services through KMFRC referrals or directly. We work with CAF Blue Cross for eligible services. If you're posted to CFB Kingston and need home support for your family, reach out and we'll coordinate.
If your VAC authorization is already in place, we can usually begin care within a few days. If we're starting fresh with VAC, the timeline depends on assessments and approvals — but we don't wait passively. We'll keep things moving and tell you exactly where the file is at each step.
We work with both VAC and private coverage on the same file. Some veterans have extended health benefits from a former employer, a pension plan, or supplementary insurance. We coordinate billing so the right payer pays for the right service — and so nothing gets double-billed.
Call us. We'll take it from here.
If you've served, or you're caring for someone who did, you've earned a phone call that actually goes somewhere. Let us walk through your options with you — no commitment, no jargon.
